Lions Clubs Join Historic Lichfield Bower Parade

Members of Lions Clubs International from Rugeley and neighbouring clubs in Cannock, Lichfield and Stafford proudly took part in the 2026 Lichfield Bower as a walking party, organised by Rugeley and District Lions Club President Debra Coburn.

Despite exceptionally high temperatures reaching 34°C — later confirmed as the hottest Spring Bank Holiday temperature on record — the event was enjoyed by large crowds who lined the streets throughout the parade route. The atmosphere remained positive and full of community spirit as participants took part in one of England’s oldest surviving traditions.

Although the much-loved Lion mascot was unable to attend this year due to the extreme heat, members said it was greatly missed. The mascot is always especially popular with children attending the parade, and organisers hope it will return for next year’s event.

Representing Rugeley and District Lions Club were Club President Debra Coburn, Lions Peter Fielding, Jane Stevenson and Mandy Shaw, together with friend Karen Rolston.

The Lichfield Bower, officially known as the Greenhill Bower, dates back to 1147. Originally established as a medieval military muster used to inspect local defence capabilities, it has evolved over the centuries into a vibrant community carnival and remains one of the country’s oldest continuing traditions.

Club members said they felt privileged to take part in such a historic occasion and were delighted to see so many smiling faces enjoying the celebrations along the parade route.

Rugeley and District Lions Club would also like to thank photographers Rob Yardley, Clive Read and Pauline Gay for kindly giving permission to use their wonderful photographs from the event.
